Lowe’s Protection Plan Claims: How to File and What the Terms Say

Last updated: October 8, 2026

A Lowe’s Protection Plan covers one product you bought at Lowe’s, such as a washer, a range or a power tool, and its claims run through an online portal and a Plan Administrator, not through the store. We read the current Terms and Conditions, the version for plans purchased on or after May 26, 2026, and compared it with what Lowe’s says on its plan page. This guide shows how to file a claim, what the plan pays, and which clauses most often decide the outcome. It is not a home warranty, so if you are comparing the two, see our Warranty or Insurance tool and are home warranties worth it.

Quick answer: how to file a claim

  1. Keep your sales receipt. The terms ask you to include the reference number on the receipt when you file.
  2. Go to claims.lowesprotect.com and enter the phone number or email linked to your plan, then choose File a Claim for the product. Or call 1-888-77LOWES (56937). For hearing-impaired service, call 711.
  3. Get authorization before any repair. The Plan Administrator must authorize all repairs in advance.
  4. If it is an emergency, describe it to the representative. Emergency requests get priority in severe weather and peak periods, at no extra charge.
  5. Follow the service option you are assigned, then tell the administrator within 90 days if you find a defect or deficiency in the service.

Filing a claim does not cancel the plan, according to Lowe’s plan page.

What kind of plan this is

Lowe’s sells protection plans for products, mainly Major Appliances and General Merchandise (power tools, outdoor equipment, small appliances and similar categories). The claims portal lists Assurant as the company behind the claims service, and the plan documents refer to a “Plan Administrator”. The terms state that the plan is not a contract of insurance. Lowe’s says plans can provide up to five years on a major appliance and up to three years on other products, but your own receipt shows the coverage period you bought. Several versions of the terms exist, and the one that applies depends on your purchase date, so open the version that matches your receipt.

What the plan covers

The terms define a Covered Failure as a product failure due to defects in materials or workmanship, or one caused by Normal Wear and Tear or a Power Surge. Accidental damage is covered only when it applies to your product type. The plan covers the labor and parts needed to repair the product, and genuine manufacturer parts are used when possible, though non-original and remanufactured parts may be used.

When coverage starts depends on the product:

Product type When the coverage period begins
Major Appliances Date of purchase, or date of delivery or installation, whichever is later
General Merchandise (other than water heaters) After the manufacturer’s labor warranty ends; if there is none, after the limited warranty; if none, on the purchase date
Water heaters After the manufacturer’s labor warranty ends, or the purchase date if there is none. Labor is covered; parts are not, except for a Power Surge

Service options and what happens if it cannot be fixed

Depending on the product and where you live, service can be in-home, carry-in to a Lowe’s store or authorized repair center, mail-in with a prepaid label, or pickup and delivery (included for outdoor power equipment with a retail cost of $799 and over). For carry-in service, you may pay to transport the product. For advanced replacement, the administrator may require a credit card authorization as security, and charges it if you do not return the claimed product.

  • Not repairable: in its sole discretion, the administrator may pay you to replace the product, not more than the original retail cost including sales tax. The plan is then satisfied and does not transfer to a replacement.
  • Fix It or Replace It: after three covered repairs on three separate occasions, each 30 days apart, a fourth needed repair can lead to a replacement payment, again up to the retail cost including tax. Repairs under the manufacturer’s warranty do not count.
  • The ceiling: the limit for a claim is the lesser of the repair cost, a similar replacement, a reimbursement, or the original retail cost with tax, and repairs plus other benefits cannot exceed that retail cost.

Benefits besides repairs

The terms list extra benefits that vary by product. One is a 50% reimbursement on cosmetic parts for Major Appliances, limited to $100 per 12-month period, for parts bought from Lowe’s. Lowe’s also advertises 50% back on performance and care items and, on some products, 30% of the plan cost back if you make no service claim. You must claim the 30% within 60 days after the coverage period ends. These benefits end when the plan ends, except the 30% reimbursement and re-installation labor coverage.

What can sink a claim

Clause What it means for you
Maintenance and neglect You must maintain the product as the owner’s manual says. Neglect, including skipped cleaning, is excluded.
Installation and third parties Improper installation, and damage by plumbers, painters or other unauthorized providers, are excluded.
Misuse, rust, pests, power supply Misuse, rust or corrosion, vermin, and an improper electrical supply are excluded.
Cosmetic damage Scratches, dents or cracked housings that do not affect function are excluded unless the plan says otherwise.
Pre-existing and manufacturer coverage Pre-existing conditions you knew about, and defects under a manufacturer warranty or recall, are excluded.
No problem found Diagnoses with no problem found, and issues a software update could fix, are excluded.
Consequential loss Property damage, injury, lost use, lost profits and downtime are excluded.
Outside the period or the U.S. Claims outside the coverage period and service outside the continental U.S. are excluded.

If a claim is denied, ask for the clause in writing and compare it with this list. The steps in our denied claim guide apply to any service plan, even though the appeal letter generator in our free tools is written for home warranties.

Cancel, transfer and renew

  • Cancel any time, no fee: within 90 days of purchase you get 100% of the price. After 90 days the refund is pro rata minus the actual cost of services and benefits you received. For a plan covering several products, canceling ends coverage on all of them.
  • How to cancel: within 30 days you can return the plan to the seller or contact the administrator by email or phone. After 30 days, contact the administrator at 1-888-77LOWES.
  • Transfer: if you sell or give away the product, you can transfer the plan by giving the administrator the new owner’s details, the reference number and the date.
  • Renewal: nobody is obliged to renew, and the renewal price may be higher.
  • Disputes: a single arbitrator under the AAA Consumer Arbitration Rules (expedited procedures), with the administrator advancing the AAA and arbitrator fees.

Before you buy: five checks

  1. Match the plan to the product category and read the terms version for your purchase date.
  2. Check when coverage starts, since it begins after the manufacturer’s labor warranty for many general merchandise items.
  3. Compare the plan price with the product’s retail cost, because the plan will never pay more than that cost plus tax.
  4. Note the maintenance duties for your product and keep records.
  5. Save the receipt and the reference number somewhere you can find in a year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I file a Lowe’s Protection Plan claim?

Go to claims.lowesprotect.com, enter the phone number or email linked to your plan, and select File a Claim for the product. You can also call 1-888-77LOWES (56937). Have your sales receipt and the reference number on it ready, and get authorization before any repair, because the Plan Administrator must authorize repairs in advance.

Is there a deductible on a Lowe’s Protection Plan?

The terms say there is no additional cost for covered service beyond what you paid for the plan, unless the terms specify otherwise. Lowe’s own plan page says approved claims have no deductibles or hidden fees.

What happens if my product cannot be repaired?

If the Plan Administrator decides in its sole discretion that the product is not repairable, or service is not available, it may pay you to replace the product, up to the original retail cost including sales tax. That payment fully satisfies the plan, and the coverage does not transfer to a replacement product.

Can I cancel a Lowe’s Protection Plan and get a refund?

Yes, at any time and with no cancellation fee. Cancel within 90 days of purchase for a 100% refund of the price. After 90 days the refund is pro rata, minus the actual cost of any service and benefits you received.

Is a Lowe’s Protection Plan a home warranty?

No. It is a protection plan for a single product bought at Lowe’s, and its terms say it is not a contract of insurance. A home warranty covers systems and appliances already in your home under a service contract with a home warranty company.
